What Determines the Cost of Cabinet Doors?

The price of custom MDF cabinet doors comes down to a few clear factors. Once you understand them, the numbers in the calculator above make sense — and you can estimate almost any project yourself.

1. Finish Level

This is the biggest driver of cost. We offer three levels, and each adds labor and materials:

  • Unfinished — raw industrial CNC-cut MDF. You prime and paint. Our lowest-cost option, orders from $350.
  • Primed — heavy-duty solvent-based polyurethane acrylic primer applied to every surface and edge. You skip priming and just topcoat. From $19/sq.ft.
  • Painted — fully finished with high-grade commercial enamel in your color, ready to install straight out of the box. From $30/sq.ft.

2. Door Style

A flat slab front is the simplest to machine and finish. Shaker profiles cost a little more because of the routed detail, while decorative styles like step shaker or custom raised panels require extra time on the CNC and hand-sanding between coats.

3. Size & Quantity

Doors are priced by the square foot, so larger doors cost more. On top of that, there is a small per-piece fee ($7 for unfinished, $12–$16 for primed, and $17–$20 for painted) that covers machine setup, handling, and individual edge prep on every door and drawer front.

4. Minimum Order

Each finish level has a minimum order amount: $350 for unfinished, $900 for primed, and $1,500 for painted orders. You can mix and match any styles and sizes within a single project to reach the threshold.

Unfinished vs Primed vs Painted — Which Should You Order?

It depends on who is doing the finishing and how much time you want to save.

Order Unfinished if…

You have a spray setup or a painter and want full control over color and sheen. It is the most economical choice for cabinet shops, refacing professionals, and contractors who handle finishing in-house.

Order Primed if…

You want to skip the most time-consuming prep work. Our polyurethane acrylic primer seals the Ranger Platinum MDF completely against moisture and grain rise — you just scuff-sand lightly and spray your topcoat. A solid balance of budget and job-site speed.

Order Painted if…

You want factory-grade doors delivered ready for installation. Ideal for builders, general contractors, and homeowners who want a smooth, durable commercial finish without running a paint operation or dealing with overspray.

Pro Tip: Ordering factory-painted components saves substantial shop space, drying time, and labor costs. For many contractors, the higher price per square foot is far more profitable than spraying doors on-site.

Cabinet Door Cost — FAQ

How much do MDF cabinet doors cost on average?
Unfinished MDF cabinet doors start at $9/sq.ft, primed at $19/sq.ft, and painted at $30/sq.ft, plus a per-piece fee ($7 for unfinished, $12–$16 for primed, and $17–$20 for painted). On average, a standard upper wall cabinet door (12"×30" or 2.5 sq.ft) costs around $30 unfinished, $62–$68 primed, and $95–$102 fully painted. Use our instant calculator above to get exact numbers for your dimensions.
What materials and finishes do you use?
We build all components using premium Ranger Platinum MDF (Made in Canada) — a high-density, HDF-grade panel chosen for maximum density and zero grain rise. For primed and painted doors, we never use cheap water-based products. We apply a heavy-duty, solvent-based polyurethane acrylic primer that completely seals the MDF against moisture, followed by a high-grade industrial topcoat enamel engineered for heavy kitchen use.
Is it cheaper to replace just the cabinet doors?
Yes. Replacing only the doors and drawer fronts (cabinet refacing) saves 50% to 70% compared to full cabinet replacement. You keep your existing cabinet boxes while getting the look, feel, and durability of a brand-new custom kitchen.
Why is there a per-piece fee?
Every single door and drawer front requires individual handling, CNC machine setup, edge sanding, and prep work, regardless of its size. The per-piece fee covers this fixed labor and setup cost, ensuring fair pricing on large doors while protecting production efficiency on smaller items like drawer fronts.
Do you offer volume discounts or trade pricing?
Yes. We work closely with cabinet shops, refacing professionals, contractors, and interior designers. If you have regular production needs or large commercial projects, text us at (945) 392-8317 to set up a trade account with preferred volume pricing.
